5 Minutes with a Witness.

One thing that occurred to me when listening to a podcast recently, is what would I say if I literally have 5 minutes with a Jehovah’s Witness and I want to leave them with something? I imagine I am not alone in this as often they can catch us at a bad time or sometimes they don’t have the time to stay for long chats themselves. So in light of this I want to start putting occasional posts here and on our Mormon Blog, (Moment with a Mormon) where we try and give some ideas of things you can say in that short period of time.

This first one I got from Listening to Matt Slick on Carm Radio. I would massively recommend that podcast by the way.

Ok so here goes, your speaking to a Jehovah’s Witness, ask them to turn to Genesis 19:24 in their new world translation. It says:

Then Jehovah made it rain sulphur and fire from Jehovah, from the heavens, upon Sod′om and upon Go‧mor′rah

Why does this say Jehovah made it rain sulphur and fire from Jehovah?

Next go to Amos 4:10-11, still in the New World Translation.

10“‘I sent among YOU people a pestilence in the nature of that of Egypt. With the sword I killed YOUR young men, along with the taking captive of YOUR horses. And I kept making the stink of YOUR camps ascend even into YOUR nostrils; but YOU did not come back to me,’ is the utterance of Jehovah.

11“‘I caused an overthrow among YOU people, like God’s overthrow of Sod′om and Go‧mor′rah. And YOU came to be like a log snatched out of [the] burning; but YOU did not come back to me,’ is the utterance of Jehovah.

Ask them why does God speak like this? Why did Jehovah send fire from Jehovah, and then say that He sent an overthrow among them like Gods overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah as seen in the Genesis verse? If God is a single person and not a Trinity, this is a problem, however if God is a Trinity of persons this makes sense. Try and let them see this for themselves.

Simple as that guys more soon.

  1. This one I heard and it was good. Ask them to tell you what their gospel is in 1 minute, according to their religion. Ask them to repeat it a couple of times, repeat it back to them. Then show them 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, then show them Galations 1:9. (Not sarcastically though, with love and firmness).

    • Good stuff thanks, I may steal that if thats ok 🙂

    • @tk2012

thank you so much for commenting that. I’ve been talking to a jw for 6 or 7 months now. We’re practically dating. (We’re 15) her parents have ‘forbid’ her from talking to me, but she still does. My focus started to drift away from her salvation and towards my relationship with her. Recently her parents found out we were still talking, and she started into how she can’t date outside of her belief and that’s what her parents are upset about.. and this got me refocused on why I’m actually talking to her. I’ve literally tried everything, and I feel like by now I’ve gone through every doctrine with her. Tonight, once again, I cried and begged God to just save her already. I asked him to just give me the words to say to her. And lately I’ve been thinking of talking about the ‘no other gospel’ thing. I’ve actually already tried but she didn’t know what the gospel was to her religion. So seeing your comment, after going through what I went through to somehow get to this page right here, right after begging God to tell me what to say, is a miracle. Just thank you for this website. I’ve forgotten that the true gospel can actually change lives. She can hear it and believe, please pray that God opens up her eyes to the truth.

      • I will Josh! I pray that those seeds you are planting will grow.

      • Will do sorry for late reply Josh, hows it going lately?

      • Hey Bobby. It’s been pretty good lately. I’m actually suppose to talk to this girls bestfriend tomorrow.. and she’s getting baptised into the organization next month. Any tips you have that I can share with her to get her to not officially join?

      • Its a really tough one at this stage as if you start speaking out against the watchtower you will lose any chance to speak to her again as she will likely break contact with you. Ask her to go through the book of Romans with you sometime and just point out things like ch4 v5 etc and ask if she is truly saved apart from works?

Also there is the issue of the false prophecies by the watchtower for 1925, 1975 etc, however pointing this type of thing out is very risky.

I think praying like mad and talking about your assurance in Christ seem like the best options to me.

      • This is actually a quite different situation. Not the girl I’m talking to tomorrow, but the one I mentioned in the first comment, we have a really close relationship. Neither one of them will break contact with me no matter what I say really. The girl I’m talking to tomorrow is very new. I even got her to read one of your articles. She doesn’t know much about the organization and the first time I talked to her she didn’t really know of the doctrines I was bringing up to her, she’s clueless of what she’s getting herself into. Knowing the situation better can you offer any more things to talk about/to ask? (Or even somethings I could talk about with the other girl I’m really close to?) Like seriously I can bring up anything and neither one of then will break contact with me. Thank you for your thoughts so far I’ll look into Romans as well.

      • in that case mate I would say go for it with raising the issues with things the watchtower has said and then backtracked on over the years. Here is the place to go:

For example you can see here: that the watchtower used to use the pyramids in Egypt to form their prophecies, however they then backtracked later and said it was really wrong to do that.

Over the years time after time the watchtower has said something and commanded its members to believe it, then totally changed its position claiming “new light” and then condemned it with its members under the threat of excommunication if they carry on, while all the time claiming to be the one movement in the world with direct contact with Jehovah.

Other examples are organ transplants, which was once classed as cannibalism within the movement is now perfectly acceptable. This site is full of these instances, I would say spend some time on this, pick which examples you feel are the most compelling and present them to your friends.

        Hope this helps.

  2. Reblogged this on Narrow is The Way Ministries and commented:
Most definitely worth reading – if you are a Witness and God has brought you to my blog, I recommend reading this article.
If you are someone trying to reach a Witness, please read this article. Good tips to leave them with something to think about.

  3. JW’s may wriggle somewhat regarding the five-minute bullet presentation as suggested as they, as I understand it, differentiate between God [His TITLE] and Jehovah [His NAME]. And JW’s do like to use His name rather than His title! Seen like this you may appreciate some areas of possible perception differences – they using NWT and Christians using God’s Word.

I use Genesis’ 1v26 shifting from singular to plural [though some JW’s said it was with reference to “..the royal we..”!!] and John 5v5, 6,7,8. The earliest Bible we have, Codex Sinaiticus in Greek, about AD350, in The British Library and translated by their team, has it:

“5 v 5 Who is he that overcomes the world but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

v6 This is he that came through water and blood, Jesus Christ: not in the water only, but in the water and in the blood; and it is the Spirit that testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

v7 For they that testify are three,

v8 the Spirit, and the water, and the blood, and the three are one.”

Do not let anyone tell you these verses are not in scripture as per ‘The Bible Hunters’ on BBC television recently.

And, of course, there is always the great commission in Matthew 28v19.

However referring to one response listed, 1 Corinthians 1 v3 does not have the inference in Sinaiticus that Paul writing to the Corinthians what was of first importance [to tell others or, as some clerics say, as a justification for ecumenism] but what he passed on first of all as a matter of chronology not superiority, so we may be challenged here. But always enquire what is the basis of their faith and always love, listen, engage and show. God will soften some hearts [as he did with us] and make them listen too to the point of hearing Acts 10v44-46.
