A Plea To All EX Jehovah’s Witnesses

Crossroads
So you’ve left the Jehovahs Witnesses behind, you love your family but you have seen the lies of the religion….. Hooray I’m free! You are now left at the crossroads, where do you I go from here in terms of my career? Where do I go and make friends? Should I how celebrate Christmas? Is all religion bad?

A lot of EX Jehovahs Witnesses say the following when they leave the religion.

“I’m free so I don’t care about what is true”
“So many religions, no one has complete truth…all religions should just get on, after all they pray to GOD”
“I’ve read the bible, it was written by so it is completely meaningless”
“Show me the evidence”
“I will live the way I WANT now”
“Well I’m a Christian, but I don’t talk about it, and I don’t go to church – don’t necessary believe in the whole bible – but some parts are good”

I too said a lot of these things. However my attitude is someone different to what it was 7 years ago when I first stepped out the Watchtower organisation. Lets take some of these comments one at a time. A plee with EX JW’s to read this as I really care about you, and I think some of these issues are really important.

“I’m free so I don’t care what is true”
Well I plea with you that you really should! For the sake of you and your family. I have some news for you. 10 out of 10 people die. Un-fortunately that’s true for you too. So are you going to stand before him and say “well lord, I didn’t really care whether you existed…but I believe you now”. I have even heard of people saying “I’ll give God a piece of my mind when I see him”.

A question I have for you “un-believers”. When something bad happens why do you blame the God you don’t even believe in? Why do you blame God for war when you don’t believe he exists? That’s like blaming Santa for not bringing you Christmas presents…”yes, its Santa’s fault…even though I don’t believe he exists”…yes it is as crazy as that!!!!!!!

But is it really God’s fault for war? If someone is stabbed would you blame the inventor of the knife…NO its our fault!!! God said “thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13). The problem is with us. Is it Gods fault for starvation? Has he not given us this amazing planet that gives everyone enough to eat? Is the problem not the fact that we are greedy as mankind? … God has given us instructions that we blatantly ignore.

Proverbs 14:31 – Anyone who oppresses the poor is insulting God who made them. To help the poor is to honor God.

The problem is with us.

Why do you blame God? Because you know he exists.

Romans 1:18,19 – For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

Are you actually FREE as an EX Jehovahs witness? Well you are out of a religious system that dictates how you live, what job you can have, what holidays you can celebrate etc. But you are not free from your sin, you can’t not believe in Jesus and expect that you will not be condemned on judgement day.

John 3:18 – Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

I plea with all EX – JW’s …believe in the son of God.

“So many religions, no one has complete truth…all religions should just get on, after all they pray to GOD”

Should we not all just accept all different religions and faith? Well is that exactly what we have done in Europe? We have just gone “Yeah, come on in and bring your Islam over and we will embrace it” What has it resulted in?

  • Extremists that are operating in own country.
  • Muslims cursing Jews and Christian every Sunday.
  • Nearly all food companies are selling halal meat.
  • Christianity getting mocked – but if someone upsets/ offends a Muslim everyone goes mad.

Moses had it right…Pharaoh had given Moses permission to worship the Lord Yahweh in Egypt, but Moses said no we can’t because you guys worship all these false idols. (Exodus 8)

Now I am not saying we shouldn’t respect people in other faiths. But to say we can mix worship with Muslims or other faiths would be completely against scripture.

Roads

Ephesians 4:4 – There is ONE body and ONE Spirit, just as you were called to ONE hope when you were called.

All roads lead to God…yes! But they lead to his wrath or his glory.

“I’ve read the bible, it was written by so it is completely meaningless”

Have you actually read the bible? For 24 years I read the bible – but never did actually know what it said. You see the problem is I only ever read the bible through the eyes of the religion I belonged to. When I came out of the religion I took the glasses off and read it for what it actually was. Even the Watchtower recognises that if you read the bible alone you would come to different conclusions.

They say that it is sufficient to read the bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home. But, strangely, through such ‘Bible reading,’ they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom’s clergy were teaching 100 years ago…”The Watchtower, August 15, 1981, pp. 28-29

So don’t think for one second that just because you read the bible, you have any idea what it says….you don’t! For once I agree with the Watchtower quote…if you read the bible alone you will chance your view!

“Show me the evidence”

I hear this all the time. The reality of it is that people are not interested in evidence, when someone asked Christopher Hitchens what you would do if you saw God, he said “I wouldn’t believe!” …to hear his quote and for information on this issue regarding on “evidence” I would highly recommend Sye Ten Bruggencate’s DVD , how to answer the fool…

Of course there is plenty of evidence not only for the existence of God but indeed for the proof the bible is his inspired word.

Did your house have builder? Can you see him? Feel him? You met him? ……Does this mean they never existed?

Hebrews 3:4 – For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

Evidence is completely subjective, we all the same information in front of us, but actually science tries to do carbon dating without a worldwide flood, because they have a pre-superstition that didn’t happen even though evidence says it does and that’s how we get the grand canyon. Bottom line…you will look for every reason not believe in God because you have the wrong idea about him. The bible is very clear, about people who deny that God exists.

“Psalm 14: The Fool Says in his Heart, ‘There is No God’

“I will live the way I WANT now”

Yes, one of the wonderful things about not being in a man made religion is you are left with a lot of choices to make regarding your lifestyle. The easiest thing to do now though is to have the attitude of “I’ll do what I want now”. Sadly even EX- Jehovahs Witnesses who proclaimed Christians say this kind of thing. Yes we can now make own decisions regarding various things in life. But are we doing this in line with Gods word?

How does God feel about sex before marriage?

Revelation 21:8 – But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

How does he feel about homosexuality?

Romans 1:26,27 – Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

So why do we say to people “it doesn’t matter”………it really, really does!!!

Yes our Lord forgives sin, but forgives the ones that are repentant and believe in him, he is a God of justice, so therefore the ones who are un-repentant will indeed “pay the penalty.

“Well I’m a Christian, but I don’t talk about it..don’t go to church and don’t generally share my faith unless someone asks”.

Jesus said :-

Matthew 28 “Go and make disciples”

How are we going to this if :-

  • We are not sharing our faith.
  • We are telling sinners that “its ok”.
  • We are telling EX JW’s they are “free” without them hearing the gospel.

Granted you won’t be popular, but Christ did say you will be an object of hatred. But do you not love these people enough to tell them the truth?

Are we called to bring down the watchtower or make disciples? Are you doing what YOU want as oppose to do what the God Almighty wants?

We are called to be evangelists not activists!

If you don’t go to church, please don’t think I question your salvation, but again why are we not following the word of God?

Hebrews 10:25 – Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

So will you just “do want you want” or follow the word of God?

I see it happen time and time again Christians saying “welcome to your freedom” when someone leaves the Jehovahs Witnesses. Un-less you know the Lord and truth you are not free.

John 8:32 – “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

God Bless,
Jason Thickpenny

  1. “They say that it is sufficient to read the Bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home. But, strangely, through such ‘Bible reading,’ they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom’s clergy were teaching 100 years ago…”—The Watchtower, August 15, 1981, pp. 28-29

I was brought up from birth into a Jehovah’s Witness family, but left that organization in the 1970’s. The quote from that 1981 Watchtower is chilling because it shows how Witnesses are manipulated. Here are two other quotes that influenced me while I was a Witness:

Watchtower 15 June 1957 “Respond to the directions of the organization as you would the voice of God.”

Watchtower 1 June 1967 (page 338) “Heavy research is not necessary. The Watch Tower has done it for you. The most beneficial study you can do is read the Watchtower and Awake or a new book by the organization.”

Witnesses believe they know the Bible, but they only believe the bits that seem to support their own teachings. They place more importance in the Society literature they read, and would never dare to question or challenge their leaders, those seven men who control their every thought and action and who dare to suggest that they are “the voice of God.”

I thank God that even though it took me 20 years to get over my indoctrination, God healed me and overcame my barriers. When He broke through and I finally understood that Jesus Christ had died for me, that it was personal, I became free at last. It is the Holy Spirit who opens eyes, unstops ears and reveals who Jesus Christ REALLY is, and then the Bible leads us to truth – God’s truth and not the version of truth put about by the Governing Body.

Christians have been defending the gospel that was once for all time given to the saints, doctrines such as the divinity of Christ Jesus and the need to be born again and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. “Apostate doctrines” do not come from reading the Bible. They come through the pages of the Watchtower magazine and Society literature that claim Jesus is a created angel and that everybody will get a second chance to be saved. Those are “apostate doctrines” and they come from the men of the Governing Body who twist the Bible and corrupt the gospel.

Thank you for your article, Jason, and I pray God will continue to draw Witnesses to Him and out of the spiritual dark into the light that is God’s truth.

  2. Thanks Jay,

A succinct and challenging summary of the many pit-falls of so-called freedom from the “Watchtower” – I know myself how easy it is to “accept Jesus” as “Lord and Saviour” but fail to acknowledge or adhere to his word. Perhaps ex-JW’s who become Christians struggle because they see the Bible as a “rule book” as opposed to a “fellowship book”

Moreover an aspect that most people are not conversant with is the fact that the society in which we live has a huge bearing on how we think. Freedom is therefore subjective. In other words when we think we are moved from “oppression” to “freedom” oftentimes we have simply moved from one world view to another without much evaluation of its truthfulness. It is easy to exchange one “religion” (including atheism) for another “religion”. The result is the same you don’t find truth.

Francis Schaffer in “How should we then Live”? said:

“Peoples presuppositions lay a grid for all they bring forth into the world. Their presuppositions also provide the basis for their values and therefore the basis for their decisions. Presuppositions rest upon that which a person considers to be truth of what exists.”

We all have them, no one is free of them, but Schaffer makes a further interesting observation.

“Most people catch their presuppositions from their family, surrounding society the same way a child catches measles. BUT people with more understanding realise that their presuppositions should be chosen after a careful consideration of what world view is TRUE. When all is done, when all alternatives have been explored, “not many men are in the room” – that is, although world views have many variations, there are not many basic world views”

Consequently understanding the dynamics of “why we think the way we do” both individually and within society is a first stepping stone to uncovering “truth” – which is of course not an abstract idea but a person – Yeshua – Jesus – is embodiment of “Truth” – to know him is to touch, feel and experience truth. The Western world once knew this living truth. However, take that reality away and the individual and society eventually ends up in “Nihilism” as Nietzsche correctly concluded.

See this short overview of the “crisis of our age”

    Thanks again
    Jason
