Jehovahs Witness Outreach Manchester 2016

-Matthew 11:28-

Come to me all who are weary and heavy burdened and I will give you rest.

Another year gone by for the Jehovahs Witnesses and there district conventions. Being honest, the district conventions where never an enjoyable time, and I dare say if Jehovahs Witnesses are being honest they don’t think most of them enjoy it either. But they go out of duty thinking that this is spiritual food at the proper time.

This year Christians have gone to Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester for outreach work. I have been able to go to Manchester this year and this is my blog from the day.

Manchester arena is one of the best venues I have been to for outreach work, but it also was one of the most challenging. The first thing was that for the first time when I have been to a convention they announced that some apostates where outside and told everyone not to talk to us. The second thing was I was literally stalked by the security guys all day, the moment I started a friendly conversation with a Jehovahs Witness they would literally push them away and shut down the conversation.

Some Jehovahs Witnesses though either did not get the message or where clearly desperate for help to be pulled out of this pit known as the Watchtower.

“Vincent” was just one of the many Jehovahs Witnesses we spoke to this day, who clearly was burdened by the things said, particularly the talk about shunning family members. He nearly burst into tears when I showed him Matthew 11:28, and see how simple the message was. I also met someone who is a Jehovahs Witness that watches the Youtube channel and said to keep up the good work.

I must say though that for me the most powerful reaction was when all the Jehovahs Witnesses where leaving on the exit ramp where 3 Christians singing “amazing grace”. These Jehovahs Witnesses will not go home thinking about the convention they will be thinking about the Christians singing amazing grace.

The hymns of the Jehovahs Witnesses are very monotone and dull. They also all relate around the organisation. Amazing grace is a song of worship to our great God, you could see just how surprised people where….they even stopped to listen.

We had over 100 visits to the URL’s that were being held up and despite the best efforts of the security people, people still took leaflets and stopped to talk.

However here are some responses the Jehovahs Witnesses gave us, which you may have been presented with as well.

“Have you not got anything better to do?”

Well actually no…..I have things I enjoy more, I have other things that need doing, but what greater job is there than doing the work of the lord and giving the gospel to Jehovahs Witnesses.

“We don’t come to your church to preach!”

Well if you believe that Christianity is going to be destroyed at Armageddon then you really should! Where did Paul preach to the Jews? The temple! Perhaps Jehovahs Witnesses should be more bold as they actually did used to do exactly that!

“Why don’t you just leave us alone?”

….Erm….what? This is ironic that Jehovahs Witnesses are calling people annoying. All Jehovahs Witnesses HAVE to go from door to door and often people feedback how much of a nuisance they are. Why don’t I leave Jehovahs Witnesses alone? Because I love them….that is all.

“Why don’t you knock on doors?”

Its people I am interested in not doors! What is with this obsession with knocking on doors and it being the best way of evangelising? Jesus always went to where there people / crowds. Why don’t I knock on doors? Because most people don’t answer them now and tend to be out more which is why street preaching is such a good form of outreach. But it’s like Jehovahs Witnesses think they are somehow better because they knock on doors.

“We don’t teach that anymore!”

Deuteronomy 18:20-22 – “‘If any prophet presumptuously speaks a word in my name that I did not command him to speak or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die. However, you may say in your heart: “How will we know that Jehovah has not spoken the word?” When the prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah and the word is not fulfilled or does not come true, then Jehovah did not speak that word. The prophet spoke it presumptuously. You should not fear him.’

At what point does this not apply? The fact you don’t teach anymore the generation of 1914 is irrelevant. The fact is Jehovahs Witnesses claim to be Jehovahs mouth piece on earth today – if that is the case, God is lying in the Watchtower. These are not imperfect men in Brooklyn – they are people that claim God is using them – if this is the case you put yourself under the authority of scripture.

So that is it for another year, a massive thanks to all the people that came to outreach work and if you are a struggling Jehovahs Witness, we are all here to help you.

  1. May God bless your efforts to reach Watchtower members with the liberating good news of Jesus Christ . Acts 26:17-18

  2. Bravo….. If just one single Jehovah’s Witness takes to heart what you were saying, it will have all have been worth it! May the LORD JESUS bless your work. Amen

  3. It was indeed a challenging day, a full on day of spiritual warfare. As such it would be very easy to crumble under the vitriolic remarks of the Witnesses. I believe it is even harder for ex-JW’s to do this work as deep wounds and doctrinal confusion can often resurface under the harsh words and actions of active witnesses.

While many positive experiences can be related and praise God URL visits increased, nevertheless a darkness enveloped the convention. Please indulge me as I relate a few negative examples, just so you can comprehend more fully the defensive mechanisms that come to the fore when a witnesses worldview is challenged.

One witness lady brought me a can of drink, I thought how kind and refreshing at last someone who cares. After taking the drink she said: “now go home and stop telling lies!” – kindness and harshness wrapped into one act! Weird!

While in open conversation with one witness couple, a male witness, probably in his 50’s grabbed my shoulder, pulled me backwards and shouted in my face: “Are you an apostate!” – I answered “no I’m a Christian” – then man raved “He’s an apostate, he’s an apostate” at the top of his voice, bouncing around the pavement like a man possessed. He then warned the couple again, “don’t speak to this man, he will poison your mind” and ushered the couple away. This was not a steward, just a well dressed witness and these are not isolated expereinces.

Another witness when challenged on doctrine etc. stated “Your drinking old wine, you need the new wine” and proceeded to speak over us about Watch Tower doctrines and how wrong Christians are. I found that with most conversations they simply do not listen. Instead they take the high ground and speak over you as if we are all idiots. The aim is to get a witness to think outside the Watch Tower box. A very difficult task.

I showed one man, who was a bible study visitor, the following verses:

1Co 15:35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?”
1Co 15:48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.
1Co 15:49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
1Co 15:51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
1Co 15:52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
1Co 15:53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.

I asked him if he believed in the resurrection. He answered affirmatively. I then asked how we as believers put on immortality? Paul explained that the resurrection of the dead was a heavenly transition through which all believers receive glorified bodies at the resurrection, immortal bodies fit for heavenly dwelling.

His reply – which I half expected – was that this verse apply’s only to 144,000. My heart sank as I listened to him explain all about an earthly resurrection, a paradise earth, etc. Instead of thinking on the promises of God in 1 Corinthians, he reinterpreted the verses through the lens of Watch Tower doctrine.

We also – believe it or not – had a JW sympathiser – a young lad probably in his twenties, who heckled us saying our outreach was wrong and we should “leave those poor people alone” – perhaps he had had some contact with the JW’s, or maybe he was enamoured with the postmodern worldview of “love and tolerance” – God only knows!

Overall a challenging day. However whatever is said against us, we must not take insults or abuse to heart, “we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls” (Hebrews 10:39) – we simply sow the seed of truth. It is the LORD who will employ whatever channels necessary to lead his sheep home. John recorded Jesus as saying:

“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27-28)

Thanks to all who came and supported the day, some of whom travelled great distances to do outreach. Also thanks for all your prayers across the globe!

Finally I would concur with Jason that singing hymns outside conventions is both a balm to the weary evangelist and a powerful tool to reach into the hardened hearts of Jehovah’s witnesses. May many more Jehovah’s witnesses hear, respond, and experience God’s “Amazing Grace”!

“I sing to Jehovah during my life, I sing praise to my God while I exist.” (YLT)

    Shalom
    Jason
